5 ways to create concise content for your business

Writing for your business doesn’t have to be stressful. Here’s my five top tips to communicate your message effectively.

1. Write!

The biggest problem many business owners have when creating content is getting started. You are the only one who knows the ins and outs of your business and what you want to communicate. So, to start, write everything you want to communicate down on paper (or in Word) without any editing. This will ensure you include everything you want to convey to your customers/clients.

2. Read and edit

Now that you have everything laid out, it’s time to start editing. This may be only the first round of edits, so don’t be concerned if you need to rewrite some parts – this is just part of the process and nothing to do with your writing skills! Try and cut back or reword things so each point you make is concise and direct. People are spending less time reading content these days so the more ‘to the point’ your message is, the better.

3. Take a break

The best thing to do at this point is to take a break from your work. Think of this like a palate cleanser, equivalent to sniffing coffee beans between perfumes. Sometimes reading the same sentences over and over will tire out your brain and you’ll miss spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. So yes, this is your permission to grab a cuppa and go outside to enjoy the sunshine. Just remember to come back!

4. Fine tune and check spelling

Once you’ve finished your first edit and taken a much-needed break, return to your work and read it over with fresh eyes. Fine tune any clunky sentences and do a spell and grammar check. It irks me when business owners don’t double check their work and post with obvious errors. It looks unprofessional and your customers will think you’re not serious about your business.

5. Read one last time

It doesn’t hurt to read over your work one more time before publishing. You never know what you might have missed. If you can, get someone else you know to read it too! Once you’ve completed the last read through, hit publish. Believe in yourself and your work. You know your business best, so communicate that.
